Kent Adult Type 1 Diabetes Education (KAT1E) is a diabetes education programme for people living with type 1 diabetes. Certified by the Quality Institute for Self-Management Education and Training (QISMET) Diabetes Self-Management Education quality standard, The course provides information and support for people with type 1 diabetes.

The course provides an opportunity for participants to share their experiences about managing diabetes on a day-to-day basis. KAT1E is led by qualified healthcare professionals including a Diabetes Specialist nurse and Diabetes Dietitian.

Course objectives

• Learn new skills and develop confidence in the daily management of your diabetes.
• Discover ways to reduce hypos, manage weight and improve wellbeing.
• Meet others and share similar experiences.

Course delivery

Four-day course (one day per week for four weeks) in locations across East Kent.

Course content

• Living with diabetes: Injection technique, all about insulins, blood glucose and ketone monitoring.
• Carbohydrate counting: Learn how to estimate the carbohydrate content of your meals and snacks.
• Adjusting insulin doses: Learn how to adjust your insulin with your meals, for physical activity and during illness.
• Hypoglycaemia: Recommended treatment and driving guidelines.
• Long-term health: How to develop effective relationships with healthcare professionals.
• Social aspects: Pregnancy, travel and driving.
• Your questions and answers.

Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) is a way of managing type 1 diabetes and provides people with the skills necessary to estimate the carbohydrate in each meal and to inject the right dose of insulin.

DAFNE has a collection of courses with up-to-date information on DAFNE for people living with type 1 diabetes and for healthcare professionals.

Course objectives

• Discover how to lead a normal life while controlling their blood glucose levels and reducing the risk of long-term diabetes complications
• Learn from experience and practice the skills of carbohydrate counting and insulin adjustment.
• Meet others and share experiences.

Course delivery

We have a variety of different course options to suit:

• DAFNE course – 5 days - Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm
• DAFNE course - one day per week for five consecutive weeks 9.00am to 5.00pm
• DAFNE course – remote learning through six planned sessions and home learning
• PUMP course - 5 days - Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm
• PUMP course - one day per week for five consecutive weeks 9.00am to 5.00pm

Course content

DAFNE allows people to fit diabetes into their lifestyle, rather than changing their lifestyle to fit in with their diabetes

Most of the training is built around group work, sharing and comparing experiences with other participants. However, there are opportunities for each person to speak to DAFNE Educators individually.

Type 1 Diabetes Education (T1DE) is a programme for people over the age of 18, who have been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes for over 6 months.

On completion of the course, you will have short follow-up sessions at the following checkpoints:

• 6 weeks post-completion
• 6 months post completion
• 12 months after completion

Participants will also be expected to have blood testing carried out prior to the 6 month and 1 year follow up.

Course objectives

• Learn how to adjust mealtime insulin, in accordance with diet and activity,
• Gain confidence to be proactive in managing your diabetes and improving your glycaemic control

Course delivery

This is a four-day programme that runs one day per week from 9.30-3.30pm across four weeks.
